FAQS

Have a Question?

Google says most websites do not need to use the Disavow Tool because Google can usually determine which links to trust. You should generally consider disavowing when you have a considerable number of spammy, artificial, or low-quality links and those links have caused, or are likely to cause, a manual action. Google reference
Do not judge a backlink only by DA, DR, Spam Score, or Toxic Score. Look for clear signs of manipulation such as paid links intended to influence rankings, link schemes, autogenerated spam, hacked pages, or large-scale irrelevant link networks. Google reference
Not automatically. Semrush Toxic Score is a third-party metric and is not a Google ranking signal. Use it as a starting point, then manually review the referring website and the context of the backlink. Google reference
Yes. If you accidentally disavow legitimate backlinks, Google may stop considering those links when evaluating your site. This is why the tool should be used carefully. Google reference
A manual action is one of the strongest reasons to consider using the tool, but Google also allows its use when a substantial number of unnatural links are likely to result in a manual action. Google reference
Use a domain-level disavow when you want Google to disregard links from the entire referring domain. Use a page-level disavow when only a specific page is problematic. Google reference
Do not automatically disavow every new link. First review the referring domains and look for patterns. Google can already detect and neutralize many spam links automatically. Google reference
Use a plain text file with one URL or domain per line. For an entire domain, use domain:example.com. For one page, use the full URL. Lines beginning with # can be used as comments. Google reference
Open Google's Disavow Links Tool, select the correct Search Console property, and upload your completed disavow.txtfile. Google reference
Google says it can take a few weeks for a submitted disavow list to be incorporated as Google recrawls and reprocesses the pages containing those links. Google reference

Important

Be Careful What You Disavow

A domain-level rule applies to links from the entire website. Page-level entries are better when only a specific page is problematic and you do not want to exclude potentially useful links from the rest of the site.

Do not disavow backlinks simply because they come from an unfamiliar website or have a low third-party authority score. Review the link and its context before adding it to your file.
